This is one of the most common situations I come across. The SEO is working. Google is showing the business. But type the same question into ChatGPT or Perplexity — nothing. Here's why that happens.
Google crawls your website, analyses it, and ranks it against other websites. That's what SEO optimises for.
ChatGPT doesn't use Google. It uses training data — information it absorbed before a cutoff date — plus Bing for some queries. Perplexity does live web searches but through its own index. Google AI Overviews pull from Google's index but specifically favour structured, cited sources, not just ranked pages.
Ranking well in Google tells you nothing about your standing in any of these systems. They're measuring different things.
Uses Google's index — so pages Google has crawled can appear. But it prioritises pages with structured data, clear answers, and sources it can cite. A ranked page with no schema markup and no FAQ content is less likely to appear than a lower-ranked page that has both.
Based on training data with a knowledge cutoff. Knows about businesses and brands it encountered frequently in that training data. A locally well-ranked business with no external mentions, press, or citations is unlikely to be in the training data at all.
Does live web searches via its own index. Favours sources it considers authoritative and citable. A business website can appear here, but Perplexity tends to favour well-structured pages with clear, direct answers — not marketing copy.
Uses Bing's index rather than Google's. A business well-optimised for Google but not verified in Bing Webmaster Tools may rank poorly in Bing — and therefore poorly in Copilot answers.
The good news is that the fixes for AI visibility mostly improve your overall online presence anyway. None of them require undoing what you've already done for SEO.
Structured data gives all AI systems a machine-readable description of your business. It's the single highest-impact change for most small businesses.
Directories, trade bodies, local press, review platforms — every mention that corroborates your business across the web builds the entity AI systems trust.
Add FAQ pages and content that directly answers the questions your customers ask. Not persuasive copy — clear, factual answers AI systems can cite.
It can help with Google AI Overviews, which pull from Google's index. But it has no direct effect on ChatGPT or Perplexity. Those tools don't use Google's index at all.
Schema markup first. It's the most direct signal to all AI systems and can affect Google AI Overviews within weeks. Then entity building — getting your business correctly and consistently mentioned across the web.
