What Is AI Search Visibility?
AI search visibility is how well your business shows up when people ask AI-powered platforms a question. Not in a list of links, but in the actual answer the AI generates. If you are not in that answer, a growing number of potential customers will never know you exist.
The platforms that matter right now are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot. Between them they handle hundreds of millions of searches every day. Semrush tracked 600 million unique monthly visitors to ChatGPT alone in May 2025, before the full rollout of Google AI Mode.
These platforms do not return ten blue links. They generate a direct answer. They read sources, synthesise what they find, and write a response that often includes specific business recommendations. The businesses that get cited in those responses get the sale. The ones that do not get cited do not get a look in.
How AI Search Differs From Traditional Google Search
Traditional Google search is keyword matching. You type "plumber Manchester", Google finds pages containing those words in the right places, and ranks them by authority and relevance.
AI search is entity recognition. When you ask ChatGPT "can you recommend a reliable plumber in Manchester", it is not hunting for pages with those keywords. It is looking for entities: things that exist in the real world with verified, structured identities. A business with a clear, machine-readable identity profile is far more likely to be cited than a business that only exists as unstructured text on a webpage.
This distinction matters because you can rank well in traditional search and still be completely invisible in AI search.
| Traditional Google Search | AI Search | |
|---|---|---|
| What it reads | Keywords on pages | Structured entities and verified data |
| What it returns | Ranked list of links | Direct answer with citations |
| Key ranking signal | Backlinks and on-page content | Schema markup, entity signals, authority |
| Overlap | Only 51% of AI citations match Google's top 10 results (Semrush, 2025) | |
| Conversion rate | ~2.8% average organic | ~14.2% from AI-cited traffic |
That conversion gap deserves attention. Customers arriving from an AI citation have already been told your business is worth looking at. They arrive pre-qualified in a way that traditional search traffic cannot match.
Why Your Google Rankings Do Not Protect You Here
A Semrush study found only 51% overlap between AI Mode citations and Google's top 10 organic results. If you have built your visibility strategy entirely around Google, roughly half of all AI citations are going to businesses not even in your Google top 10. You are competing in a different game, and the rules are different.
I see this regularly. A business owner spends years and real money on traditional SEO. They rank well for their key terms. Then AI Overviews start appearing for those same searches, and they are not in the answer. Their competitor, who ranks lower but has structured data in order, gets the citation instead.

The Five Factors That Determine AI Search Visibility
These are the signals AI systems use to decide whether to cite a business. They are not the only factors, but they matter most for a UK small business trying to improve quickly.
Structured Data
Schema markup is machine-readable code that gives AI systems a verified identity profile for your business. Businesses with proper schema are over 36% more likely to appear in AI-generated answers (WPRiders, 2025).
Entity Verification
AI systems cross-check your identity against authoritative external sources: Companies House, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Google Business Profile. The more verified references exist, the more confidence the AI has in citing you.
Content That Answers Questions
Content structured as direct answers to specific questions, particularly with FAQ schema, is significantly more likely to be pulled into AI responses. Prose that buries the answer is much harder for AI to work with.
Off-Site Authority
Where you are mentioned off your own website matters. Reddit threads, industry directories, review platforms, and press coverage all contribute. Semrush found Reddit is cited in AI responses at 176% frequency for service business queries.
Technical Accessibility
If AI crawlers cannot read your site, nothing else matters. This means your robots.txt does not block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. It means a clean sitemap and an llms.txt file that accurately describes your business and links to your key pages.
What AI Invisibility Actually Costs
Consider what happens when a potential customer searches for your service type in your area using Google AI Overviews. They get a direct answer naming two or three businesses. Yours is not one of them. They click through to the first one. That sale is gone before you even knew it was available.
"AI search visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic visitors. The businesses being cited are not just getting traffic. They are getting sales."
Semrush projects AI search traffic will exceed traditional Google search by 2028. The businesses that sort their AI visibility now will have a two-year head start on those that wait. In a local market, that lead is very hard to close.
What This Means for Your Business
AI search visibility is not a bonus on top of your existing SEO. It is a separate layer that operates by different rules. Strong Google rankings do not guarantee it. A good-looking website does not guarantee it. The businesses appearing in AI answers have done specific technical things that make their data readable to AI systems. Understanding what those things are is what this guide series is about.
